Caption on reverse [translation]: "Dr. Koda Rohan. Born in Keio 3 (1867), July. He wrote many famous novels, such as 'Five-Storied Pagoda' and 'Water Lapped into the Sky,' and many other masterpieces. He is known as a prince of novelists with Ozaki Koyo. In Meiji 40 (1907) [or Meiji 44 (1911)] he became a doctor of literature, and in Showa 2 (1927) he became a member of Teikoku Academy. He is well-read in Japanese and Chinese literature."
