Caption on reverse [translation]: "Elderly woman visits shrine before sunrise. The wife of Count Makino praying for peace during his trip. (Tokyo) October 7, 1946. There is an elegant old woman who has been walking the pebbled path to Meiji Shrine at 5:00 a.m., while it is still dark, since the 25th without missing one day. She was talked about in [?] but she is the wife of former Imperial Household Minister Makino (63). She is praying for peace during his trip representing Hokkaido. The count resigned from all official posts since the 2-26 incident and has been living quietly. But because of his enthusiastic loyalty, he [?] and prayed for the health of [?]. His wife wakes up at 3:00 a.m. and, for the count, she visits the Shrine to pray for the health of [?]. The picture is 1, Count Makino's wife praying."
