Caption on reverse [translation]: "(Tokyo) February 27, 1937. A painting from former Minister of Foreign Affairs Count Nobuaki Makino's collection was designated a national treasure on the 27th. The elderly count, living with his wife in their house in Shibuya, spoke about this artwork which he loves. 'The artist is a pupil of Tanrei. He was expelled from his house because he did not keep the ways of his family. However, he developed his own unique way of writing to the flow of _____, and he made a name. He was admired by Mr. Matsudaira of Echigo and Mr. Kagamaeda. I received this calligraphy from somebody 40 years ago, when I was governor of Fukui.' The pictures are 1, The calligraphy and Count Makino."
