In the lead up to World War II, her uncle sent Kikuno and her brother back to the United States, where they were raised in foster care in northern California. During World War II, Kikuno was sent with missionaries to the Minidoka concentration camp, Idaho. Mitsuo was born in the United States and then sent to live with an uncle in Japan. He returned to the U.S. before World War II, then was sent to the Amache concentration camp, Colorado. The couple met in Chicago after the war.",
