Suffered tragic loss in camp when father got lost outside collecting wood and perished in the elements. Volunteered for the army and served in the signal corps, eventually working for the Civil Aeronautics Administration and Boeing. Also one of the early members of the Seattle Nisei Veterans Committee.",

Family was removed to Puyallup Assembly Center, Washington, and Minidoka concentration camp, Idaho. In 1943, father decided to repatriate to Japan. The family was transported to Ellis Island detention station to reunite with father and board a repatriation ship, the SS Gripsholm. Transferred to Crystal City internment camp, Texas, after being denied entry on SS Gripsholm. Remained in Crystal City for duration of the war. Resettled to Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1946.",

            "bio": "In this session, Elaine Kim led a panel of Elaine Reiko Akagi's friends (Ann Fujii Lindwall, Arlene Oki, Karen Yoshitomi, and Bill Tashima) in a remembrance conversation on Akagi. Elaine Reiko Akagi devoted her life to JACL, teaching children with special education needs, and a love of animals She was active in the Detroit Jr. JACL in the early 1960's and led the Detroit Chapter to action during the Vincent Chin murder in Detroit. After moving to Seattle in the 1990's, Akagi became Chapter President in 1996. Akagi was one of the Chapter leaders in initiating Teacher workshops to instruct teachers methods teach the lessons of the JA WWII in the classroom and to instill critical thinking in students to apply these lessons to current day issues. Akagi endowed a Chapter scholarship with a primary purpose of encouraging students of color to go into the field of special education. Akagi was a firm believer that children's education is enhanced when the teachers look like them.",

Renounced U.S. citizenship and expatriated to Japan with parents and siblings in 1945. Lived and worked in Japan until 1948, when returned to the United States. Author of Betrayed Trust: The Story of a Deported Issei and His American-Born Family During WWII, published in 2004.",
