"description": "Photocopy of a typed letter from Teru Koyama to Edward J. Ennis concerning the rehearing of Keizaburo Koyama's case. Mrs. Koyama then goes on about her faith and that of her husband's. In both of their cases, they say that their incarceration has helped them to become better Christians. She also talks about her declining health and how much she fears passing away while her husband is still interned elsewhere. While she is now able to work a little bit to bring in money for the family, she's had to spend months recovering. She and her kids were twice offered a chance to go to Japan, but refused, finding the offer insulting. Mrs. Koyama fears that the kids are losing morale, though her son keeps busy with Boy Scouts and her daughters with the church involvement.",

Mrs. Koyama notes that it is very unusual for Issei parents to raise their kids in an American-style environment, but she doesn't regret the decision to do so. While she was worried about war between the United States and Japan, her husband said they would support the country of their children's birth - the United States. Mrs. Koyama starts talking about the difficulties of being separated from her husband for two years. She said the first few months were rough, but she received a lot of support from friends and neighbors, though she was always worried about being attacked by someone who didn't know her, but only saw her as an enemy. She writes that there was a sense of relief once the bars of the Portland Assembly Center were closed behind her. While life is difficult, she is learning to do more with less.",

The letter from Miriam, she writes that she misses him and that the Portland Assembly Center paper is saying that they will be moving to Idaho. She hopes that with the move he will join them. The letter from Teru talks about the recent church services and baptism of several friends at the Portland Assembly Center. She asks that Kei write a letter to the Satos once they relocate to the new camp. She writes about some people leaving for Wyoming next week. She describes how she is enjoying studying the Bible, English, History, and Civics, and she advises Kei to do the same because she does not want him to lose the ability to communicate with their children since they primarily speak English. Advises she might not write for a while as she has to pack for the family's move.",

On the left side of the envelope is a purple \"Censored\" stamp. Inside the envelope was a newspaper clipping about Boy Scout Troop at the Portland Assembly Center. William Koyama's name is listed twice and underlined. A letter, dated Aug 30, 1942, that accompanies the newspaper clipping talks about their recent visit to the Portland Assembly Center to visit with the Koyama family. Advises that Chape is still unwell, but may get better with some warm weather. Encourages that the children will be fine since they've been raised well, and that they pray for the family and expect to hear often from Kei's wife, Teru.",
