vh Yoshino Grace Fukuhara Niwa Interview (ddr-manz-1-139)

Nisei female. Born October 29, 1942, in the Manzanar concentration camp, California. Daughter of well-known artists Henry Fukuhara. After leaving camp, the family moved to New York. Yoshino eventually returned to live in California, where her family resided before World War II.

vh Susumu Iwasaki Interview (ddr-manz-1-63)

Nisei male. Born June 18, 1927, in Terminal Island, California. Grew up in Terminal Island before being removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California, during World War II. Joined the Military Intelligence Service, working as an interpreter in Japan during the U.S. occupation. Married in Japan and eventually returned to California.

Kibei female. Born 1917 in Seattle, Washington. As a child, sent to Japan for education, and returned to the U.S. in the 1930s. Was married living in Glendale, California, when World War II started. During the war, was removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, returned to California.

Nisei male. Born June 25, 1918, in Selleck, Washington. Grew up in Selleck, a lumber community, before moving with family to Santa Monica, California. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, lived for a time in Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning to California.

After leaving camp, attended UCLA before returning to California and establishing a nursery business.

Nisei female. Born January 24, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. Grew up in the Los Angeles area, where parents ran a flower business. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. While in camp, held various jobs, including working for the camouflage net factory. Eventually returned to California.

White male. Born February 16, 1930, in Hollywood, California. Grew up in Oregon before family moved to Big Pine, California, prior to World War II. Was involved in a high school football game with Japanese American students from the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After the war, served in the military and eventually settled in Sacramento, California.

After leaving camp, worked briefly with family at Seabrook Farms, New Jersey, then attended college in Cleveland, Ohio. Eventually returned to California.

One of the major players in the movement for Japanese American redress and reparations, Mr. Hohri founded the National Council for Japanese American Redress (NCJAR).
