Sansei male. Born April 3, 1949, in East Los Angeles. Grew up in South Central Los Angeles in the Watts neighborhood, where parents owned a grocery store. Attended UCLA and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Father was one of the "Fort McClellan Disciplinary Barrack Boys," or "DB Boys," who resisted military orders during World War II and were court martialed and imprisoned at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.
