Caption on reverse: "NEW ASSOCIATE JUSTICE: Philip L. Rice (right) was sworn in Tuesday as an associate justice of the territorial supreme court by Supreme Court Justice Edward Towse (left), with Associate Justice Ingram M. Stainback standing between them. A circuit judge on Kauai, Rice was recently appointed to the high court by President Eisenhower and confirmed by the senate. He will be the first Republican to sit on the supreme court since 1949. He succeeds Justice Louis LeBaron, a Democrat whose term has expired.--(Hawaii Times photo)."
