Caption on reverse [translation]: "Rare Matteo Ricci Map of the World. Papal Emmisary Archbishop Paul Marella visitied the palace at 11 a.m. on the 5th and presented Pope Pius XII with the world map. This map of the world was drawn by Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), the famous Italian founder of the Chinese Catholic Church, using Chinese characters. It had been lent by the Vatican Library to famous Matteo Ricci researcher Pasquale d'Elia, a professor at the University of Rome, who translated the map into Italian and annotated it. Photograph: the papal emissary visiting the palace and the map to be presented. [Stamped] 1940."
