Caption on reverse: "U.S. Marine receives highest award. Captain James E. Swett (left), U.S. Marine Corps flier, receives the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. award for heroism, from Major General Ralph J. Mitchell of the U.S. Marine Corps, commander of Allied air forces in the Solomon Islands area, at an informal ceremony at a South Pacific base. The award was made in recognition of Capt. Swett's feat of shooting down seven Japanese planes in a single combat. In all, he has downed 12 Japanese aircraft."
