Caption on reverse: "4/18/44. U.S. Commander of Western Carolines attack. Vice Admiral Marc A. Mitscher of the U.S. Navy commanded the powerful American carrier task force which blasted Japanese bases in the Western Carolines in the Central Pacific during a three-day assault, late in March, 1944. Units and planes of the task force sank or damaged 46 Japanese ships, destroyed 160 enemy planes, probably wrecked another 54 aircraft and battered Japanese installations on the island bases. Adm. Mitscher also directed the American carrier attack on the Japanese key base of Truk in the South Pacific."
