Caption on reverse [translation]: "Kingsford Smith Fails to Set New Record from Britain to Australia. (Sydney) Rengo Arrived Today. The famous Australian aviator Major Kingsford Smith, who departed from Windham on September 23 to break the record set by former RAF pilot Charles William Scott in April of nine days and three hours from Britain to Australia, was forced to make an emergency landing near Smyrna, Greece. Having failed, he returned to Britain on the 9th (see foreign news transmission).
