Caption on reverse [translation]: "Ms. Hawthorne [?] Decorated Again. Ms. Hawthorne of the [illegible] Girls Academy [illegible] founded in 1902 and greatly supported it; following the 1923 earthquake she immediately [illegible] a million yen [illegible] She was awarded the Medal with Blue Ribbon in 1920 in recognition of the thirty years she has spent working tirelessly towards the education of our young women. She has now again been decorated, this time with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 6th Class. Photograph: Ms. J.C. Hawthorne surrounded by some of her students."
