Halsey, Jr., of the U.S. navy (left), commander-in-chief of Allied forces in the South Pacific; Frank Knox (center), U.S. secretary of the navy, and Admiral Ernest J. King, commander-in-chief of the U.S. Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations, line up in Secretary Knox's office where, on Jan. 12, Admiral Halsey, already the recipient of a Distinguished Service Medal, was presented with the Gold Star for his 'brilliantly planned offensive which secured the South Pacific area for the United Nations.' The award was presented while Admiral Halsey was in the U.S. for important conferences on strategy in the war against the Japanese. 1943."
