Caption on reverse [translation]: "Fairbanks, American Hero of the Silver Screen, Dies Suddenly at his Home in Santa Monica. (Hollywood, 12th, Domei) Proclaimed a hero of the silver screen, Douglas Fairbanks died suddenly at 1 p.m. on the 12th at his home in Santa Monica, a suburb of Hollywood. He was 56. (Santa Monica, 12th, AP). A star of many movies during the age of silent movies, most notably 'Robin Hood', he afterwards changed to become a movie producer. He was married three times. He had a son, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., with his first wife, Anna Beth Sully. He then married and divorced Mary Pickford. He married his current wife Lady Sylvia Ashley in 1936. His son was unable to reach his deathbed in time. [description of photograph cut off]. [stamped] December 12, 1939."
