DESCRIPTION

Caption on reverse: "U.S. Destroyer Sinks Japanese Four-Convoy in Marshalls Area. Lieutenant Commander Donald T. Eller of the U.S. Navy (upper left) is the commander of the destroyer Burns (pictured below), which sank an entire convoy of four Japanese ships in the Marshall Islands area while operating with a U.S. Navy task force in the attack on the Central Pacific islands on Jan. 31, 1944. The Burns was returning to the task force after rescuing American flyers forced down at sea in the action, when it shelled and sank a Japanese tanker, a medium cargo vessel and two smaller craft. Under the protection of a powerful American fleet, a U.S. landing force of soldiers and Marines captured Kwajalein, the largest atoll in the Marshalls, and killed 8,122 Japanese soldiers against a loss of 266 Americans in one week of battle, according to a U.S. Navy announcement."
