Caption on reverse: "U.S. Marine commander in Bougainville Battle. Major General Allen H. Turnage of the U.S. Marine Corps, who commanded U.S. Marine forces in their successful attack on Bougainville, last Japanese stronghold in the South Pacific Solomon Islands, is pictured watching his troops maneuver. After the Marines established a beachhead, U.S. Army soldiers landed on Bougainville and launced a campaign to drive the enemy from the island."
