Caption on reverse: "5/10/44. U.S. Navy Central Pacific Commander. Admiral Raymond A. Spruance, as commander of the Fifth Fleet of the U.S. Navy, directs naval operations in the Central Pacific. He led the American task force that attacked Japanese bases in the Western Carolines, within 600 miles of the Philippine Islands, and was in over-all command of the amphibious operations that led to the seizure of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands."
