Sohei (John) Hohri and Harold Landon Letters Collection

Letter from Sohei (John) Hohri to Harold Landon & Thelma Jo Bruce, dated January 5, 1997. Sohei provides the address for Crawford Peak, a gym coach in 1937, and writes a story about his interaction with Peak as a youth. Sohei writes that when internment began, Mr. Peak went down to the buses to see his students off. He mentions how the Manzanar students wrote to 12 Los Angeles coaches for help in setting up a gymnastics program, and only Coach Patterson and Mr. Peak responded. Sohei writes about the rings Peak sent to Manzanar, how kids lined up to use them, and how half of the 10,000 people in Manzanar were under the age of 18.
