Original caption: Private First Class George Inouye, an American of Japanese descent who was wounded in Italy, listening to a Japanese American band that entertained wounded U.S. soldiers at Halloran General Hospital in New York City. The entertainers, who had been defense workers and students before volunteering for the U.S. Army in Hawaii a year earlier, were members of the 171st Infantry Battalion stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. They were granted a special ten-day furlough to entertain in service hospitals.
