Sakahara and Tanaka Families Collection

In the bottom row of this 1940-era photograph from left to right are Clarence Arai, Pauline Sakahara, Suzanne Sakahara, James Sakamoto, and Mike Masaoka. Pauline Sakahara was a Vashon correspondent who worked for the Japanese American Courier. The Japanese American Courier, the first Japanese American newspaper published entirely in English was created by James Sakamoto. Clarence Arai, James Sakamoto and Mike Masaoka were among the founders of the JACL. Pauline Sakahara was a member of the group that organized the JACL contingent on Vashon Island and she attended the first JACL convention.
