Original summary excerpt: The use of Japanese-American combat troops in the battle for Italy received widespread attention. Both AP and UP wire services carried feature stories on the exploits of these Nisei soldiers; many of the accounts received front page notice, and were accompanied by photographs. All stories emphasized the fighting spirit of the outfit -- mostly volunteers from Hawaii who trained at Camp Shelby.
