Alameda Japanese American History Project: Buena Vista United Methodist Church Collection

Caption below photo: 1909 Silver Link club, an early Japanese junior league held at the Japanese Methodist Episcopal Church (later Buena Vista). At center is Superintendent Gladys Arnold. They gathered regularly for fellowship and activities organized by Gladys. The teens engaged in activities such as embroidery, afternoon tea and Bible study. It was a way for the young women to learn "Western" culture and etiquette, as well as a time to enjoy each other's company.
