    "bioghist": "Thomas Rockrise (1878-1936) was born Hikotaro Tsumanuma. He would later take the first name Iwahiko. He was born on June 7th, 1878, in Yamagata-shi, Uzen-ken, Japan to Sotaro and Naka Tsumanuma. When Iwahiko was in his early 20s he left Yamagata-shi after he contracted a bad bid for his father's construction company. He first went to Tokyo and then to Malaya, Sumatra, and India. While in India, he was baptized into the Methodist Church in 1903 and took the name, Thomas S. Rockrise. The last name of Rockrise comes from his Japanese first name, Iwahiko. 'Iwa' meaning a large rock and 'Hiko' meaning 'the hope for the future, the sun will always rise'. \r\n\r\nIn 1904 Thomas left India for New York City via Naples, Italy. He arrived in the United States on September 23, 1904. During his time in the United States, Thomas would use his Japanese and English names interchangeably. Thomas attended Buchtel Academy, graduating in 1907 and then attended Buchtel College attending one year of a degree in mechanical engineering. In 1908, Thomas was accepted into the School of Architecture at Syracuse University, and graduated in 1912 with a Bachelor's degree in architecture. After the completion of his degree, Thomas moved to New York City and become an licensed architect and started his own firm in 1916. In 1915, Thomas met Agnes Asbury. The couple married on December 1, 1915. In late 1916 Agnes gave birth to their only son, George.\r\n\r\nIn 1920, Thomas made his first trip back to Japan since he left as a young man.  He visited his family in Yamagata and secured architectural work across East Asia.  In 1922, Thomas was diagnosed with tuberculosis and sent to a rest in Saranac Lake, New York.  As his heath declined over the next decade he did little to no work.\r\n\r\nAgnes Margaret (Asbury) Rockrise (1886-1953) was the only child of Francis \"Blakie\" Asbury and Tennesse (Earle) Asbury.  She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Following Thomas' diagnosis of tuberculosis, Agnus opened and run a rest cottage in Saranac Lake for tuberculosis patients until Thomas was too ill be cared for at home and was sent to the county sanatorium.  Agnes then found work in New York City as a practical nurse and companion to support her family, and continued to do so until her retirement in the 1950s when she moved to San Francisco to be near her son's growing family.",
