A dozen American Flying Fortresses, manned by United States Army Air Force crews and personally led by Brigadier General Ira C. Eaker, bombed Rouen, France, 87 miles northeast of Paris, in the first all-U.S. bombing attack on German-held Europe. Not a single American plane was lost in the day supply lines. The Flying Fortresses dropped their entire bomb loads directly on the target area. Freight yards, trains, and roundhouses were destroyed.
