Nisei female. Born September 23, 1925, in San Francisco, California. Grew up in California, where father worked as a bookkeeper. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, moved with the family to a rural community in Maryland, then to Seabrook Farms, New Jersey, before eventually returning to California.

vh Shimako "Sally" Kitano Interview (ddr-manz-1-54)

Nisei female. Born April 6, 1932, in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Grew up on Bainbridge, and was eight years old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Removed with family to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. Before the war was over, moved to Chicago, Illinois. Returned to Bainbridge Island after World War II.

vh Annie Sakamoto Interview (ddr-manz-1-77)

Nisei female. Born January 17, 1939, in Los Angeles, California. Given up for adoption after birth, and placed in the Shonien orphange in Los Angeles. After World War II broke out, removed to the Children's Village in Manzanar. Left camp to live with a foster mother in Los Angeles, eventually becoming a registered nurse.

Nisei male. Born 1932 in Chatsworth, California. Grew up in the San Fernando Valley, California, where parents ran a farm. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, returned to the San Fernando Valley, was drafted into the military during the Korean War, and eventually became an engineer.

vh Mary Blocher Smeltzer Interview (ddr-manz-1-38)

White female. Born in 1915 in Texas. Grew up in La Verne, California, where family was active with the Church of the Brethren. During World War II, lived in the Manzanar concentration camp, California, and worked as a teacher there. Along with husband, established a hostel in Chicago, Illinois, for Japanese Americans leaving the camps.

Nisei male. Born April 26, 1929, in Pasadena, California. Grew up on Terminal Island, California. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, family lived for a time in a hostel in Des Moines, Iowa, before returning to California. After the war, became an attorney and longtime community activist.

Sansei male. Born 1939 in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Incarcerated with parents at Manzanar concentration camp, California, and Minidoka concentration camp, Idaho. Returned to Bainbridge Island after end of World War II. President of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC), a community organization dedicated to the preservation of Japanese American history on Bainbridge Island.
