Collection Rose Honda Collection (ddr-manz-9)

The Rose Honda Collection is comprised of photographs and documents from the Manzanar concentration camp, California, during World War II. Materials include a photograph of a funeral in camp, Christian church publications, ephemera such as school performance programs, and documents regarding requests to leave camp.

vh Harry Ueno Interview (ddr-densho-1002-7)

Nisei male. Born April 14, 1907, in Pauilo, Hawaii. Lived in Japan from 1915 to 1923, and settled on the mainland upon his return to the United States. Was married in 1930, and was removed along with family to Manzanar concentration camp, California, during World War II. While in Manzanar, organized the Mess Hall Workers Union. …

One article mentions 14 boy scouts saved a flag from a mob during the Manzanar riot.

Nisei male. Born June 18, 1927, in Terminal Island, California. Grew up in Terminal Island before being removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California, during World War II. Joined the Military Intelligence Service, working as an interpreter in Japan during the U.S. occupation. Married in Japan and eventually returned to California.

Kibei female. Born 1917 in Seattle, Washington. As a child, sent to Japan for education, and returned to the U.S. in the 1930s. Was married living in Glendale, California, when World War II started. During the war, was removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, returned to California.

Nisei male. Born June 25, 1918, in Selleck, Washington. Grew up in Selleck, a lumber community, before moving with family to Santa Monica, California. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, lived for a time in Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning to California.

Nisei female. Born November 30, 1927, in Montebello, California. Grew up in Montebello where father ran a wholesale nursery business. During World War II, removed with family to the Pomona Assembly Center and Manzanar concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, attended UCLA before returning to California and establishing a nursery business.

Nisei female. Born January 24, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. Grew up in the Los Angeles area, where parents ran a flower business. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. While in camp, held various jobs, including working for the camouflage net factory. Eventually returned to California.
