Nisei female. Born January 10, 1916, in Los Angeles, California. Grew up in Los Feliz, California, where family ran a flower growing business. During World War II, removed to the Manzanar concentration camp, California, and worked in the camp's medical laboratory. After leaving camp, returned to Los Feliz and reestablished the flower shop.
Narrator Shizuko "Suzie" Sakai
Nisei female. Born April 14, 1922, in Yakima, Washington, and grew up in Central Washington state. During World War II, removed to the Portland Assembly Center, Oregon, and the Heart Mountain concentration camp, Wyoming. Left camp to attend college in Kansas and North Carolina. Eventually returned to the West Coast.

Nisei male. Born October 27, 1923, in Montebello, California. Grew up in Montebello, where father and other family members ran a farm. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, family moved to Colorado to avoid mass removal. Incident in Topaz Internment Camp (ddr-densho-292-53)
Seiji Kaibe recounts a time when he and several other young men tried to steal building materials from the Topaz Hospital construction site in order to better their own barracks. The men were caught by armed guards and Kaibe was almost shot. Bill T. Sakai also adds that they only received a reprimand the next day …

Fujiya Hotel (ddr-one-2-120)

According to the donor, the Fujiya Hotel was a resort hotel that the U.S. military commandeered for “R and R” (rest and relaxation). Both military and civilian personnel used the facilities.
