Mary M. Hirai was born on November 19, 1900. She left Japan as a baby and moved to Hawaii with her parents, then they went to San Jose, California, when Mrs. Hirai was aged five. Her father worked in a cannery and her grandmother cooked in Toyokan, a Japanese hotel.
