During World War II, sent with family to the Santa Anita Assembly Center, California, and the Rohwer concentration camp, Arkansas. After leaving camp, lived in a Quaker-run hostel in Cincinnati, Ohio. Eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois, where parents ran a cleaners business.
