Original caption: San Bruno, California. Shown here is one type of barracks for family use. These were formerly the stalls for race horses. Each family is assigned to two small rooms, the inner one with no outside door nor window. The center has been in operation about six weeks. 8,000 evacuees are now assembled here.

Original caption: San Francisco, California. Civilian Exclusion Order Number 5, ordering evacuation of residents of Japanese ancestry, posted in a vacant store window on Grant Avenue in Chinatown. This establishment, like many others in Chinatown, was operated by proprietors of Japanese descent. Evacuees will be housed in War Relocation Authority centers for the duration.

Original caption: Manzanar Relocation Center, Manzanar, California. An elementary school has been established with volunteer evacuee teachers, most of whom are college graduates. Attendance at this time is voluntary. No school equipment is as yet available and available tables and benches are used. Classes are often held outside in the shade of the barrack building.

Nisei female. Born April 6, 1932, in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Grew up on Bainbridge, and was eight years old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Removed with family to the Manzanar concentration camp, California. Before the war was over, moved to Chicago, Illinois. Returned to Bainbridge Island after World War II.

vh Annie Sakamoto Interview (ddr-manz-1-77)

Nisei female. Born January 17, 1939, in Los Angeles, California. Given up for adoption after birth, and placed in the Shonien orphange in Los Angeles. After World War II broke out, removed to the Children's Village in Manzanar. Left camp to live with a foster mother in Los Angeles, eventually becoming a registered nurse.

Nisei female. Born August 29, 1921, in Seattle, Washington. Spent prewar years in Burlington, Washington. Was just starting college when incarcerated at Tule Lake concentration camp, California. Left camp early because of illness and married a Nisei GI, Harvey Watanabe. Lived in Midwest for duration of war and resettled in Seattle, Washington following the war.

Sansei female. Born June 10, 1945, in Denver, Colorado, where parents moved after leaving camp during World War II. Grew i[ om Denver, where father had an insurance company. Attended the University of Colorado and then Colorado College. Studied abroad in Italy before moving to California. Eventually earned a PhD and became an architectural historian.

Sansei male. Born 1939 in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Incarcerated with parents at Manzanar concentration camp, California, and Minidoka concentration camp, Idaho. Returned to Bainbridge Island after end of World War II. President of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC), a community organization dedicated to the preservation of Japanese American history on Bainbridge Island.
