Japanese Americans receiving inoculations (ddr-densho-151-110)
Original caption: San Francisco, California. As a safeguard for health, evacuees of Japanese descent were inoculated as they registered for evacuation at 2031 Bush Street. Nurses and doctors also of Japanese ancestry, administered inoculations. Children were given special attention. Evacuees were later transferred to War Relocation Authority centers for the duration.

This group of people on the race track are new arrivals who have been registered, inspected, medically examined, and are now on their way to their assigned places in the barracks.

Original caption: Mountain View, California. Four sisters in the Mitarai family. Their father operated an industrialized farm in Santa Clara County, prior to evacuation. Farmers and other evacuees of Japanese ancestry will be given opportunities to follow their callings in War Relocation Authority centers where they will spend the duration.

Original caption: Manzanar Relocation Center, Manzanar, California. This is the type of barrack buildings in this relocation center. Each one contains four rooms, to house four family groups. Each has it's own outside entrance, two at the side and one at each end. There are thirty-six blocks of barracks.

Mary M. Hirai was born on November 19, 1900. She left Japan as a baby and moved to Hawaii with her parents, then they went to San Jose, California, when Mrs. Hirai was aged five. Her father worked in a cannery and her grandmother cooked in Toyokan, a Japanese hotel.

Seichi Hayashida Interview (ddr-densho-1000-14)
Nisei male. Born May 15, 1919, in Seattle, Washington. Grew up in a Japanese American farming community in Bellevue, Washington. Incarcerated at the Pinedale Assembly Center and Tule Lake concentration camp, both in California, and at Minidoka concentration camp, Idaho. Longtime member and supporter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL).

Takae Tanino Walts Interview (ddr-densho-1000-508)
Nisei female. Born August 4, 1930, in Bellevue, Washington. Grew up in Bellevue, where parents ran a farm. During World War II, removed to the Pinedale Assembly Center and Tule Lake concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, returned to Seattle, Washington, and eventually established a career as a flight attendant.

Gerald Nakata Interview (ddr-densho-1001-6)
Nisei male. Born March 18, 1923, in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Prior to World War II, parents operated a barber shop, farm and grocery store. Removed to Manzanar concentration camp, California. Left camp and lived in Illinois, then eventually returned to Bainbridge Island. Mr. Nakata passed away on June 3, 2007.
