Original caption: Manzanar Relocation Center, Manzanar, California. Common sight during the long summer evenings after the day's work is done. As yet, there are no barber shops.

Nisei male. Born March 18, 1923, in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Prior to World War II, parents operated a barber shop, farm and grocery store. Removed to Manzanar concentration camp, California. Left camp and lived in Illinois, then eventually returned to Bainbridge Island.
Narrator Sumi Uyeda
Nisei female. Born 1932 in Sacramento, California. Grew up in the small town of Penryn, California, where mother was a barber. During World War II, removed to the Marysville Assembly Center and Tule Lake concentration camp, California. After leaving camp, returned to Penryn.

Washington Hotel (ddr-densho-34-45)
The two-story Washington Hotel (left) was started in about 1900 by Hanjiro Kono and was later operated by Sohichi Shigemura. The Ikuta Barber Shop is behind the community bulletin board along the walkway. Port Blakely is located on the southeast end of Bainbridge Island, Washington.
