CANADA JAPANESE FACE RESTRICTION

Removal of Nipponese From Coast Will Be Asked at Ottawa by Emissaries

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- The status of the Japanese residents in British Columbia became more complicated this week, following the departure of the Standing Committee on Orientals for Ottawa.

It was reported here that the committee will ask the Dominion Government to order the removal of all Japanese males over 18 years of age from the British Columbia coast line.

Wilson Fears Riot

Alderman H.D. Wilson, who has been prominent in affairs pertaining to the Japanese residents, voiced the opinion that unless something is done quickly there may be serious consequences. He even predicted there may be riots.

The committee also will ask that a three-man board be created to dispose of Japanese fishing vessels immobilized by the outbreak of the war. In this connection, it was reported here the past week that Japanese propaganda, and possibly messages to Fifth Columnists, is being broadcast to British Columbia day and night. It was said Japanese fishermen can tune in these programs without hindrance. The federal law permits anyone to own a short-wave receiving set under license.

Police Say Many Left

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police recently reported that when they began to register Japanese residents last year several hundred Japanese left several hundred Japanese left the Province. These were believed to have entered illegally.

Several local organizations are planning mass meetings to urge the federal government to take action on the Japanese.
