MISLS SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER TO WIND UP 1946 SEASON

The Presidio MISLS Softball Team rang down the curtain on the 1946 season by splitting a double header on their northern invasion last Sunday. In the opener, the locals had a field day in swamping the Berkeley nisei 12-6 but didn't fare so well against the Berkeley Veterans who stopped the invading MISLS crew by a 5-2 count.

The first game was a rout from the opening inning when the MISLS lads pushed across two runs on hits by Kojima, Kozuma and Kitagawa. Scoring in every period, the locals teed off for a total of 12 hits highlighted by Kitagawa's line homer with two men aboard. Kimura, MISLS chucker had a no-hit game going into the sixth frame but weakened and was nicked for 3 hits and was nicked for 3 hits and 4 runs in that period.

The second game saw the Presidio bats silenced by Berkeley's Moe Katow, who rationed the MISLS boys to 6 hits and 2 runs as the Berkeley Vets racked up a 5-2 triumph. The Vets, who were held to a single hit in a previous game with the Presidio, showed a complete reversal of form as they pounded 7 lusty blows off Lefty Tsuruda, who pitched a better game than is indicated by the score.

The MISLS squad came thru with a highly successful season this year. In local softball circles they tasted defeat but twice; these two defeats coming at the hands of the Carmel Pine Cones, a team that reached the semi-finals of the State Softball Tournament '46.

Bouncing back from these two setbacks, the MISLS boys went to work and as a result, topped every other team of importance in the area.

The MISLS team was coached by Lt Hachiya and a hearty round of applause is due him for the excellent work he has done.

To the men of the Presidio MISLS Softball Team: WELL DONE.......

Look out for Billy Butterfield's RUMORS ARE FLYING which is also waxed by the Andrews Sisters. Last year about this time everyone was singing IT NIGHT AS WELL AS SPRING and THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA, AND THE SANTA FE. YOROZU SPEAKS.......

To GIs who want a little recreation on the side -- a suggestion. This comes to you from a seasoned group of fishermen. No doubt you have heard that this Peninsular area offers one of the finest fishing grounds on the coast. Tough the current season for commercial fishing is at an all-time low, this is no indication for the local Isaac Waltons to rack up their rods and reels and take off for the hills. The coves below the Presidio offer good fishing for the fun seeking junior angler. Whether fishing is done with a two-bit pole and ten cent line or with one of those super Shakespear or Fhluger reels, it makes no difference. A boat can be rented for a nominal fee by the hour. If you have no stomach for boat-riding, remember that there is a good twenty mile stretch of surf which affords excellent areas for surf-fishing. Surf fishing is like a marine grab-bag -- you don't know wotinell you will get. It might be an occasional flounder, leopard shark, perch, bass, or even a piece of kelp.

Take a tip, fellas ... If you find time hanging too heavily on your hands, rack up your cue stick and grab a fishing rod. If your luck is bad, this sport has a two-fold recreational value .... just lie down on the beach and get yourself a good suntan. You can't lose .....
