ISLAND NISEI VOLUNTEER FOR ARMY

HUNT, Ida., Wednesday, May 5--Three nisei from the Island's evacuated Japanese colony have volunteered for and been accepted for active, fighting duty with the United States Army, it was announced today.

They are:

Arthur Koura, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. Koura, Port Madison; Takashi Sakuma, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Sakuma, Winslow, and the Rev. Tsutomu Fukuyama, son of Mrs. M. Fukuyama, Winslow.

Mr. Koura and Mr. Fukuyama will join the special Japanese American Combat Unit, now in training at Camp Shelby, Miss. After training, they expect to see overseas service on the European battlefront.

Mr. Sakuma will be enlisted in the Army Language School at Camp Savage, Minn. Now serving at that camp is Harry Yamashita, Winslow. This group, when trained, will serve in the Pacific battle zone.

Mr. Sakuma, one of the first students to be relocated from the Islanders' original camp at Manzanar, Calif., came here recently from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Mr. Fukuyama was evacuated with the Seattle Japanese colony to Puyallup and then here.

Mr. Fukuyama said he was volunteering "to carry the ministry of the Christian church to our boys away from home."

"I think that we do for our country now will determine the path of the nisei tomorrow," said Mr. Sakuma as he and Toshio Chihara, Winslow, left here for Chicago. Mr. Chihara will be employed in Chicago.

Now serving at Camp Shelby are Sgt. Nabo Okazaki, Corp. Momoichi Nakata and Sgt. Hisao Nishi, all of Winslow.

Also doing farm work in Mesa, Ida., are: George, Seiji and Keto Okazaki and Yoshio Katayama . . . Frank, Robert and Harry Koba will work on a farm in Mae, Wash.
