Vanguard Returns To Manzanar From Beet Fields

MANZANAR, CALIF., Thursday, November 26--Last Wednesday, the first of the Island's 37 volunteer sugar beet furlough workers returned to this center amid one of Manzanar's whirling dust storms.

Stepping off the bus were Peter Ohtaki, Winslow, from Idaho Falls, and Harry Yamashita, Winslow from Sugar City. Weary from their train ride the boys were nevertheless glad to se their parents and friends again. When asked how the work was, Pete Ohtaki replied, "Oh, it was O.K."

Early Friday morning, Gerald Nakata and Nobuichi Moritani, both of Winslow, returned from the beet fields with tales of freedom and hard work. On the same afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Yone Nakao, Tatsuyoshi Kojima, and Tokuo Chihara, all of Winslow, checked in at Manzanar's gates.

These workers had left here in the latter part of September and their general opinion was that they found Idaho to be quite a nice place, they had their enjoyment, and the freedom was worth the hard work.

BRIEFS...

After a few days' stay in the hospital, Mr. I. Katayama was discharged, and is up and around now ... Manzanar's school enrollment was upped two students when Tat Kojima and Tokuo Chihara, recently back from the beet fields, checked their names on the roll call ... and speaking of beets the rest of the gang will be back this week ... working on Saturdays at the camouflage nets are "Archie" Nakamura, "Jam" Koba, Vic Takemoto, Kenzo Koura, and Kee Kitayama ... Yukiko Katayama works as a dietician and feeds those little kids ... and Michiko Amatatsu still takes care of a nursery ... it's Thanksgiving, so let's all think awhile, and we'll see that each of us has those little things to be thankful for...
