21 Young Japanese Islanders Leave Manzanar For Jobs

MANZANAR, Calif., Wednesday, September 23--Twenty-one young Island residents will leave this relocation center for Montana sugar beet fields today.

They will work as beet toppers for harvesting a much-needed sugar beet crop. They volunteered.

Members of the group, most of whom will be stationed in Pondera County, are:

Toshio and Masa Chihara, Robert and Harry Koba, Arthur and Noboru Koura, Takashi and Tsukasa Sakuma, Mitsuo Katayama, Keto Okazaki, Hideo Terashita, Paul Ohtaki, Seiji Okazaki, Tike Nishimori, Toshio Sakai, Ray Kitayama, Noboru Oyama and Sumio Yukawa.

Already in Idaho beet fields are Tatsu Moritani, Sam Nakao, Kiyo Nagatani and Bill Okazaki.

ON HOSPITAL CREW

Six Islanders are employed in the camp's hospital here, recently enlarged. Working in the new 250-bed hospital as nurse's attendants are Sadako Nakata, Yoshiko Matsushita and Sueko Nishimori. Clinic clerks are Kazuko Sakai, and Miyo Mikami. Sada Omoto is employed as an orderly. The surgical staff includes Dr. K. Iwasa, husband of the former Yoshie Nakata, Winslow.

After a week and a half in the hospital, O. Koura returned to his family last week. Undergoing a minor operation, Mr. Koura has made a complete recovery.

Johnny Nakata, Winslow merchant, is heading the butchers' crew which prepares the meat for Manzanar consumption. Also in this department are Suburo and Tsuniechi Hayashida, Frank Koba, Kazue Yamashita, Gerald Nakata, F. Kitamoto, H. Hayashi and S. Sakai
