Sigeo Furuta Voted Head Of Islanders At Manzanar

MANZANAR, Calif., Wednesday, Aug. 26 -- Sigeo Furuta, Pleasant Beach, last week was elected leader of the block in which Islanders live in this relocation center.

The position is a salaried one. With other leaders, he helps form the governing body of Manzanar and is the liason [liaison] between inhabitants and the administration.

SCHOOL MAY BEGIN

Although the probability of school buildings being constructed prior to next month seemed dim, classes may start in September, officials said. Caucasian teachers, appointed by the California State Department of Education, are to move here soon. Recreation halls may be used as classrooms temporarily.

ANOTHER ISLANDER HERE

Tears, handshakes and much rejoicing marked the arrival of another Islander Sunday from a detention center. The man, who had been held in North Dakota, was released after a federal hearing and joined his family for the first time in seven months.

NAKATA IS TOPS

Gerald Nakata, Winslow, centerfielder for the Bainbridge Yankee entry in the baseball season just completed, topped Island batters and was fifth in the league at .413. Nob Oyama, Winslow, had .303. Ichiro Nagatani, Island Center, and George Okazaki, Winslow, dropped to .280 and .288 in final games.
