'Oh, Sank You Pleeze' Taboo; Issei Takes English Lessons Now

MANZANAR, Calif., Wednesday, June 3--There won't be any reason for, "Oh, sank you pleeze," when the Japanese aliens return to Bainbridge Island at the war's end, it developed at this evacuation center this week.

For fifteen Island issei are enrolled in an English-speaking class taught by several second-generation college students.

Yoshio Katayama, 24 years old, former Eagle Scout of Bainbridge Island Boy Scout Troop 497 and quartermaster of Winslow's Sea Scout Troop, and Seiji Okazaki, 26, former Life Scout of Troop 497, are now scoutmasters of a group of 33 meeting here each week. In the new troop are three Island youths: Sinchi Tonooka, Ben and Takato Takeyoshi.

A Seattle daily newspaper began arriving in the mail awhile back, addressed to the Bainbridge Island group here. It was read thoroughly and greatly appreciated, but none could say who paid for and ordered the paper sent.

Finally, a note was received stating that the subscription was a gift of the New York and New Jersey soldiers who had accompanied the Islanders to Manzanar.
