Robert Oliver, Toshiko Mikami Lead In Studies

Robert Oliver, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. P.R. Oliver, Port Madison, was graduated with the highest scholastic record in the class of 1942, Bainbridge High School announced this week.

Second in the Torch Society honor roll was Toshiko Mikami, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kikuno Mikami, Winslow.

Nine senior were graduated on the Torch honor roll, six of them being Japanese-Americans temporarily evacuated to Manzanar, Calif. The honor students, in addition to Miss Mikami and Mr. Oliver are: Betty Ann Runchey, Ferol Hansen, Ikuko Amatatsu, Ray Kitayama, Sachiko Koura, Nobuko Sakai and Sumio Yukawa.

The six Japanese-Americans were honored at unusual "correspondence" graduation exercises at Manzanar this week along with seven other Japanese-American students of the school. Regular commencement exercises were held at the school May 26 for the remainder of the class of 54 students.

Kimi Nagatani, Island Center, graduated in 1936, was in charge of the Manzanar exercises. Diplomas and copies of the commencement and baccalaureate programs were mailed to her along with special statements from Roy G. Dennis, principal, and P.F. Ruidl, superintendent.
