MANZANAR, Calif., Wednesday, May 27 -- Remember that news story that circulated throughout the nation about the Japanese, in the early days here, who had to be warned not to bathe in the wash tubs?

The noted article, which told how some of the older-generation Japanese weren't used to the showers installed here, now has a sequel. Here it is:

A Bainbridge Island Japanese (he'd better remain anonymous) now faithfully observes the anti-washtub ban. So, daily, he trudges to the shower room, carrying his washtub, and scrubs furiously in the tub under the shower sprinkler.

Island Japanese rejoiced with other residents here this week over the announcement of a pay-scale. Salaries promised were $16 a month for professional and technical workers, $12 for skilled workers, and $8 for unskilled labor. Food and shelter is included, with $2.50 a month added in canteen coupons for adults, $1 for children less than 16 years old, and $4 for couples.

Victor Takemoto, 15 years old, Rolling Bay, was recovering this week from chicken pox.

The funeral for Nobuzo Koura, Manzanita, was attended by 300 persons. Pallbearers were K. Ogawa and F. Matsushita, both of Winslow; H. Furukawa and Y. Suyematsu, both of Port Madison; O. Terayama, Battle Point, and E. Yukawa, Island Center.

The name of this Owens Valley establishment is no longer the Reception Center, but, because it now has been given permanent status under the War Relocation Authority, it is called Manzanar Relocation Center.
