Distance Didn't Halt Banquet for Seniors at Camp Manzanar

CAMP MANZANAR, Calif., Wednesday, May 20--Bainbridge High School's thirteen graduating Japanese-American seniors didn't let a mere matter of 1,000 miles stop them from joining their class in the traditional senior banquet, it developed today.

The seniors obtained permission of camp officials and held an informal banquet at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at a special table reserved for them. Following the dinner, the group danced and played games in a nearby recreation hall. Ikuko Amatatsu, Winslow, made the arrangements.

Two Japanese-American youths serving in the United States Army surprised their mothers with telegrams on Mother's Day. The tender messages were sent from posts in Texas by Privates Nabo Okazaki and Momoichi (Pork Chops) Nakata.

Islanders this week continued to take responsible teaching positions in this ever-growing community in which Islanders are greatly outnumbered by California Japanese.

Miss Ritsuko Terayama, Battle Point, is teaching a needlecraft class of 30 persons, including eight Islanders. Mrs. M. Nishi, Port Madison, and Miss Cheyko Oyama, Winslow, are teaching a kindergarten class of 45 children, including ten Islander tots.

Keto Okazaki, Winslow, recovering from having his left foot crushed by the fall of a heavy fire extinguisher three weeks ago, was walking without crutches this week but had not been able to report for work.
