Books Arrive; Manzanar Students Face Graduation
By PAUL OHTAKI
Review staff correspondent.

CAMP MANZANAR, Calif. Wednesday, April 29--Arrival of school books and lesson instructions from home this week kept Bainbridge High School's evacuated Japanese-American students busy making up for lost time.

The thirteen students will be graduated "by mail" from their home school. Sada Omoto and Takashi Sakuma, both University of Washington students, will aid in the instruction.

Mrs. Happy Nishi, incidentally, will teach the kindergarten class here.

The camp daily continues to appear more like a growing city. There are now more than 5,000 persons here. Most of them are now employed, including the evacuated Islanders. Police and fire departments are being formed.

Serious dust storms continue to appear about every three days.

A youth fellowship meeting attracted 150 young people and Robert Koba and Harry Yamashita, both of Winslow, took part in the program. Takashi Sakuma, Winslow, organized the first exclusive Bainbridge Island social. In the sports line, the Islanders went down to defeat, 5 to 4, in the opening softball game of the season witnessed by 2,500 persons.
