PATIENCE
Word comes from Camp Manzanar, Calif., where Island evacuees were sent, that they find the California Japanese to be "Oriental." Unfortunately for Island Japanese, that situation just goes to prove a contention which The Review has made for several months.
The great majority of our Island Japanese are thoroughly Americanized. How could it be otherwise. They had no "colony" here. Their homes were scattered throughout the Island. They lived as Americans. They had to. There was little way for them to cling to Japanese customs and culture.
Now they find themselves amidst "Oriental" Japanese from the "little Tokio" in Los Angeles. These California Japanese may or may not be loyal Americans.
We imagine the physical discomforts of Owen Valley will be as nothing with the job the Islanders will have living side beside those Japanese with whom they have nothing in common. The Review, though, continues to have confidence in the Americanism of our Island Japanese. It is sure that our Islanders will "take it" and return to us even more firm in their loyalty to the United States.
