Hayes Gets Wire From Shirrell in S.F.: Shoes Purchased

WORKERS TO GETS CLOTHES
Telegraphic information was received today by Joe Hayes, assistant director of the project, from Elmer L. Shirrell, director of the project, from Elmer L. Shirrell, director of the project now attending a W.R.A. regional conference in San Francisco, to the effect that shoes have been purchased for issue to enlistees engaged in hard outdoor labor.

Hayes has been further informed that new regulations concerning the issue of work clothing will be announced by the director upon his return here this coming Friday.

Food Problem Discussed by Workers' Committee

To help solve the City's food problems, the newly-formed Workers' Committee met with Joe Hayes, acting Project director; Luther Stults, mess supervisor; and Mortimer C. Cooke, transportation and supply, Saturday afternoon.

June Miyakawa, spokesman for the group, reported the acute shortage of food that existed in many of the dining halls, some of the workers reported having received only two slices of bread and tea for breakfast, Miyakawa stated.

"You can't expect people, especially those working, to be satisfied with that kind of a meal", the workers' spokesman retorted. The officials readily agreed that very few people would.

All three officials expressed surprise that food shortage should exist in the city.

More food stuffs including meat, eggs, and vegetables have been delivered to the City last week than at any previous time, the officials revealed. Residents should investigate the leak causing the disparity between foods delivered and foods served, officials opined.

More Sugar Arrives

Sugar shortage in the colony was ended with the delivery of 8000 pounds of sugar from Kalamath Falls yesterday. Each dining hall will be rationed to 15 pounds a day. Other food stuffs were also brought in from Klamath Falls yesterday on an emergency purchase.

Cash Advances to be Paid

The Administrative division in timekeeping, payroll, and auditing are bending every effort to expedite payment of June and July cash advances, it was declared by Gorman F. Kelley, budget and finance.

Administration Deeply Concerned

"We realize that food is the vital problem and we are all working hard to see that residents are well-fed," the officials stated. "We are just as interested as you are in solving the problem."

The Workers' Committee is comprised of two representatives each from farmers, warehouse, house maintenance, engineers, carpenters, hospital workers, transportation and motor pool.

No One Will Go Hungry Says Hayes

Assertion that no one in the Tule Lake Project will go hungry due to lack of food was reiterated today by Acting Project Director Joe Hayes.

"I'll see to it that our residents will have proper nourishment while in the Colony," Hayes continued, "even if I have to dig into my pocket to get the food."

Scarcity of food supply is a paramount issue not only in Tule Lake, one resident observed, but throughout the country now at war.

"There are times when we must sacrifice many things and forego some of the food we were accustomed to to meet the crisis," he opined. "We are in the emergency now. Soldiers on the battle lines throughout the world are dying by the thousands every day fighting for what they believe is to be true and just."

"Certainly, we who have gone through many hard times in the past, ought to be able to give up a lot of things to keep harmony in the Colony.

"Every resident must realize that this is our Colony and the kind of life we are going to lead depends mostly on our mental attitude and intestinal fortitude. Let's never forget that!"
