MAGNUSON ASKS ACTION ON JAPS

Congressman Warren G. Magnuson requested the Dies Committee last night to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the recent apprehension of three Japanese-American soldiers digging up a camera they had buried near Sumner.

"I am especially interested in what disposition was made of the case," Congressman Magnuson said today. "Had they been white soldiers, it is my belief they probably would have faced a court martial. I understand that the authorities in Washington, D.C., said they did not wish to discriminate against the Japanese-American soldiers. That phase of the case needs further investigation.

"From a causal examination of the facts, it appears that the least that should be done is to dismiss the men from the service and return them to relocation centers.

"The governmental order to all Japanese to surrender cameras was plain and definite. When the Japanese-American soldiers came back while on furlough and dug up the camera they were fully aware they were disobeying regulations.

"The War Department authorities would do well to inform the Dies Committee what good purpose was served in taking the cases from the hands of local Army officers."
