Manager Ruffner of Seattle Tries to Orientalize Atlin, B.C., District and White Workers Are Thoroughly Aroused.

Caucasians Declare if Brown Men Do Not Leave Instanter They will Be Forcibly Ejected From Country.

VANCOUVER, B.C., Wednesday, May 15. -- Special dispatches from Atlin, B.C., say:

Angered by the introduction of Japanese into the Atlin district by J.M. Ruffner of Seattle, miners here have determined to force the Orientals out of the camp if they refuse to depart peaceably. In their fight against Japanese the miners have the townspeople behind them, either willingly or because of fear of a miners' boycott of merchants supplying Japanese with goods.

Several mass meetings to discuss action to prevent the "Orientalization" of the camp have been held, one before the Japanese arrived. At the last meeting, held Sunday, the miners decided that the Japanese must go.

In order that Ruffner might have an opportunity to present his side of the case, he was requested to address the meeting. Not coming as quickly as the impatient miners thought the circumstances justified, a force of men was dispatched to bring him.

In his statement to the thoroughly aroused miners Ruffner made a strong point of the contention that he had been unable to secure white men to carry on the work which his company had planned to do in the district this summer, and his inability in that direction forced him to bring in Japanese.

Several years ago another manager attempted to establish a colony of Japanese in the camp. The miners tolerated them for a few days and then forcibly "chased them down the trail." On that occasion some storekeepers served Japanese, with the result that their places were boycotted.

A committee of miners had been delegated to interview the Japanese and explain the situation, in an effort to induce them to depart peaceably. The miners declare if they do not leave the camp at once they will be forcibly ejected.
