New Election Is Ordered At Japanese Camp
POSTON, Ariz., Nov. 30. -- (AP) -- All positions, both civil and commercial, held by Japanese evacuees in Unit No. 1 of the Poston Relocation Center were declared vacant today as an aftermath to the uprising by a pro-Axis element.
Norris James, press and intelligence officer for the War Relocation Authority, said the action was ordered to restore the unit's self-government to Japanese loyal to the United States.
An election will be held later to fill offices which direct the civil administration of the community of 8,500 population.
The pro-Axis group, James said, forced the unit's City Council to resign November 18 under threats, and set up a de facto government. A complete work stoppage in the unit was affected by threats, and for a week the recalcitrants barricaded themselves around the town jail, where two of their members were held for assaults.
